Giving Back

March 19, 2008

The purpose of this post is twofold.  First, I want to use this platform to promote an upcoming charitable event that I am involved in organizing.  It is a pancake breakfast that is going to be held this Saturday, March 22nd, at F&S Harley Davidson in Dayton, Ohio.  The event is being held to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio, a group with which I am proud to be involved.  It is going to be from 8:00am to 11:00am.  It should be great fun, and if you are interested in finding out more or RSVP’ing for the event - visit PancakesPancakes.com  I hope you can join the fun and contribute to a great cause in the process.

More importantly is the second purpose of my post, which is to talk about how rewarding it is to work at a place that encourages employees to get involved in making the community better.  During my short time here at LUCRUM, I have been encouraged to continue my work with the Epilepsy Foundation.  Many of my co-workers have gotten involved as well.  It has been very moving to get such an overwhelmingly positive response from people whom I just recently met.  Many are even getting up early on Saturday morning - sacrificing free time - to come to Dayton for the pancake breakfast.  Pretty amazing.  What’s more, shortly after starting here, I learned that LUCRUM is actively involved with supporting the Epilepsy Foundation here in Cincinnati - a coincidence that made me feel even better about my choice to come to work here.   From the Fine Arts Fund to the Boy Scouts to countless other community organizations, we demonstrate our commitment by contributing time, money, and effort to the cause.

Some will ask “Does this take away from profitable, billable time?”  Yes, of course.  However, the value of giving far outweighs the cost of some billable hours here and there.  It adds meaning to our work and out lives.  This is something that makes our company unique.  I am thankful to senior management for their commitment to the community, and their willingness to let everyone make a difference.   I appreciate it, and I just wanted to let you know.   Not only to I love the work I get to do, I am proud of where I get do it.

Dave, that’s really it! I’ve been here four years, and I could never get the same personal support from the large corporations I’ve worked in. My daughters and I have been talking about the Pancake Breakfast, and we’ll be there!

Giving matters most. When we’re all giving, the organization gets stronger. You can look anywhere to see or hear negative. That’s easy. As the saying goes, “everyone’s a critic.” It takes a person of integrity and strong character to find the good and give back. I work with a lot of these people every day.

I’d like to echo David’s comments. I’m very proud of the work that LUCRUM does in the community. Since I’ve been here, LUCRUM has been active in supporting the Epilepsy Foundation, Camp Joy, The Caddy Classic Golf Tournament, The Boy Scouts of America, The Fine Arts Fund, The United Way, and the list goes on.

I’m fascinated with companies like Google and Salesforce.com. I had the honor of meeting the CEO of Salesforce.com last September and talking with him about the 1% philosophy that Salesforce.com has - essentially they give 1% of equity, 1% of profit, and 1% of their employee’s time to charitable organizations. I came back from that meeting loaded for bear and ready to talk John Bostick into becoming a 1% company. As he and I talked, I found out that LUCRUM give disproportionately for its size and exceeds 1% in giving. I can’t tell you how impressed I was and still am with John’s commitment to the community.

In a world where Enron and Worldcom make headlines, I’m proud to be part of a firm that works, often behind the scenes, for the betterment of the community.

Giving Back - it absolutely matters.
I’m not only proud to say I work at LÛCRUM, but also proud of all the volunteer causes that we support. The list of causes we support would be impressive for a company 5 times our size. As a parent, it’s good to be able to include our children in these causes, and, when our teenage children willingly get out of bed bright and early Saturday morning – even more impressive. The pancakes were great, and it speaks volumes about the spirit and camaraderie we all feel for one another. LÛCRUM is a great place to work.

I think it’s very refreshing to see LUCRUM support so many worthy causes with both emotional and financial support. It feels great to make a difference to our LUCRUM family as well as the greater community at large.

I hate that my family and I could not come out to support this great event, but we were there in spirit!

    Melissa,

As one of the primary architect’s of our culture and a long time leader in this organization, you were there in much more than spirit. LUCRUM was very well represented at the event on Saturday. Did I mention that the event was on a Saturday morning in Dayton? The fact that people would get up early on a weekend, drive 30 or 40 miles, and sacrifice their time and money to help support the event says a lot about who we are as a company. We employ people who care. We cultivate that in our culture. I was amazed at the support that I received for the event - and I have not even been here 60 days. Thanks Melissa for encouraging me and others here at LUCRUM to care.

Got something to say?
